Self-assessed intelligence, personality, and psychometric intelligence: preliminary validation of a model with a selected student population

    Get PDF
In the current study, self-assessed intelligence (SAI) is presented as a multidimensionalconstruct related both to personality and to psychometric intelligence. Onthe basis of data obtained from a Russian student sample (N = 496), the authorsvalidate a structural model in which SAI acts as a mediating variable between latentvariables of measured IQ and the trait of acceptance of uncertainty. Evidencefor signifi cant gender diff erences in SAI in favor of men is also given

Sources of possible artefacts in the contrast evaluation for the backscattering polarimetric images of different targets in turbid medium

International audienceIt is known that polarization-sensitive backscattering images of different objects in turbid media may show better contrasts than usual intensity images. Polarimetric image contrast depends on both target and background polarization properties and typically involves averaging over groups of pixels, corresponding to given areas of the image. By means of numerical modelling we show that the experimental arrangement, namely, the shape of turbid medium container, the optical properties of the container walls, the relative positioning of the absorbing, scattering and reflecting targets with respect to each other and to the container walls, as well as the choice of the image areas for the contrast calculations, can strongly affect the final results for both linearly and circularly polarized light

Electrochemical study of doped LiFePO4 as a cathode material for lithium-ion battery

LiFe1-xVxPO4/C (x= 0.01, 0.03, 0.05, 0.1) composites had been obtained by sol-gel method and characterized with the use of the XRD-analysis, SEM and charge/discharge tests. The doping was shown to result in decrease of electrode polarization, and correspondingly in capacity increase at high C-rates

Risk Management Model in Public Governance in Russia: Regional Aspects

    Get PDF
This article is devoted to the problem of risks in the activities of political parties. The importance of risk management is growing in conditions of social tension, which are a characteristic of Russia. The study identified the main risk factors for the ruling United Russia party in the Transbaikal Territory. These include: 1) social tension and poor quality of life; 2) internal migration and urbanization; 3) natural disasters; 4) political instability; 5) protest activity of the population; 6) competition from other political parties. A model is proposed as a conceptual basis for managing political risks in the activities of political parties. Its main components are: subjects and objects, goals, objectives and principles, resources, functions and mechanisms, specific technologies and management tools. Each of the components of the model is concretized in the context of managing political risks in the activities of the regional branch of the United Russia party, taking into account the specifics of the Transbaikal Territory. At the end of the article, it is concluded that this model can be considered as universal (for other regions and parties)

The use of Stokes-Mueller polarimetry for assessment of amyloid-β progression in a mouse model of Alzheimer's disease

Alzheimer's disease, being a major societal burden, demands improvement of current techniques for its treatment and diagnostics. Currently only autopsy histology is able to provide the definite diagnosis for Alzheimer's disease. However, the procedure is rather time consuming and costly. In the current study, we utilized Stokes and Mueller polarimetry techniques to screen for amyloid-β (Aβ) deposits in formalin-fixed, paraffin-embedded mouse brain tissue at different stages of Alzheimer's disease. The study has shown that the presence of Aβ plaques influences the properties of scattered polarized light. The Poincaré sphere was used as a graphical tool for the visualization of the alterations of the Stokes vector, obtained with Stokes polarimetry, whereas statistical moments were used for the analysis of depolarization distributions that were acquired with Mueller polarimetry. We demonstrate the sensitivity of the last component of the Stokes vector, the degree of polarization and high-order statistical moments of depolarization to the structural alterations in brain tissue, which correspond to the disease progression. The described approach has a potential to improve the existing pathology screening methods and facilitates Aβ detection in AD research
